Pretty Lights

Project Overview

Working as a VJ, content creator, and visual programmer for Pretty Lights, a renowned electronic music artist based in the US, has been an exhilarating journey. My role is not limited to traditional VJing; it extends into the realm of developing custom tools in TouchDesigner to manipulate audio and seamlessly integrates with other 3D real-time software like Notch. This case study delves into the multi-faceted responsibilities and experiences of this full-time position.

Roles and Responsibilities

VJ + Content Creator + Visual Programmer

In this dynamic role, my responsibilities encompass various aspects of live visual performance and content creation:

VJing: As the VJ, I am responsible for curating and delivering captivating visual experiences in sync with Pretty Lights' music. This involves the real-time manipulation and mixing of visuals using tools such as TouchDesigner, Notch, and Resolume.

Content Creation: My role extends to content creation, involving the development of custom visuals and animations that complement Pretty Lights' music and enhance the live performance.

Visual Programming and Development: One of the most distinctive aspects of my role is the development of custom tools in TouchDesigner to manipulate audio in real-time. These tools allow for a dynamic interplay between sound and visuals, creating an immersive experience for the audience.

On the Road with Pretty Lights

Since August 2023, Pretty Lights has embarked on a nationwide tour, amassing a staggering 25 sold-out shows at various prestigious venues across the country. Notable venues in the tour include Mission Ballroom, Dillon Amphitheatre, The Salt Shed, and The Brooklyn Mirage, featuring an impressive 80-foot wide LED panel that I custom mapped for the performance.

I have been lucky enough to work alongside the legendary Greg Ellis, a.k.a. ‘The Lazershark’ and the ever technical Eric Mintzer of Imaginex. Together, we collaborate and flow with eachother to create the cohesive lighting and visual experience of Pretty Lights in a real-time, improvisational performance.

Technical Setup

To execute these responsibilities, I work with a sophisticated technical setup:

TouchDesigner: This versatile software serves as the backbone for creating and manipulating visual content, as well as enabling custom audio-visual interactions.

Notch: The 3D real-time software plays a pivotal role in adding depth and complexity to the visual performance.

Resolume: This software is essential for seamless video mixing and playback, enhancing the overall visual experience.

Live Camera Feeds: A complex system of 40x40 and 20x20 matrices of SDI lines facilitates the integration of 12-15 live camera feeds and generative sources, adding an element of live interaction to the visuals.

Outcome

My role as VJ, content creator, and visual programmer for Pretty Lights has been a creative and technical tour de force. By seamlessly integrating cutting-edge software and technology, I've contributed to creating unforgettable visual experiences that enhance Pretty Lights' performances.

This case study underscores the power of technology in elevating live music performances and highlights the importance of creative synergy between sound and visuals. In a world where art and technology converge, this role has demonstrated the ability to craft unique and immersive experiences for audiences, making each show a memorable event.
