Red Bull Rampage 2022

Project Overview

Red Bull Rampage is an exhilarating extreme biking event, gathering world-class stunt bikers who craft daring jump lines and routes down a treacherous mountain, earning scores based on style, route complexity, and the extremity of their tricks and jumps. In this case study, we delve into the behind-the-scenes efforts of bringing these breathtaking stunts to life through cutting-edge visualization techniques.

Case Study: Visualizing Rider Lines for Red Bull Rampage

Project Name: Red Bull Rampage Rider Line Visualization

Client: Red Bull, Extended Reality Group

The Challenge

The primary objective of this project was to bring the heart-pounding action of Red Bull Rampage to a global audience through live broadcast. This required visualizing the intricate rider lines as they descended a 3D-scanned mountain, which was imported into Unreal Engine. The task was not only to map out these lines but to also create dynamic animations that would capture the essence of the riders' breathtaking descents.

Key Responsibilities

Our team's responsibilities were multifaceted and included close collaboration with the riders during the week leading up to the event. We had to map out the precise routes the riders would take, the jumps they would execute, the height and distance of these jumps, and then deliver a collection of renders to the broadcast team for a seamless, real-time broadcast.

Notable Skills Utilized

Unreal Engine Blueprinting: Unreal Engine served as the foundation for creating the dynamic visualizations. Our team utilized Unreal Engine's powerful blueprinting system to bring the rider lines to life in a 3D environment.

3D Animation and Tween Line Adjustments: We constantly adjusted and fine-tuned the animations of the rider lines on the fly, ensuring that every movement and jump was accurately represented in the virtual world.

Slow Motion Expressive Keyframing: To capture the intense moments of the event, we used slow-motion keyframing techniques to highlight the riders' most extraordinary maneuvers, enhancing the visual spectacle for the audience.

Version Control with Perforce: Managing a project of this scale required a robust version control system. We relied on Perforce to maintain the integrity of the project, ensuring that changes were tracked and managed effectively.

Multiple Iterations: Rider lines were not static; they evolved throughout the week as riders fine-tuned their routes and made last-minute adjustments. Our team was agile and adaptable, iterating on the visualizations to keep up with these changes.

Outcome

The Red Bull Rampage Rider Line Visualization project successfully brought the heart-pounding excitement of extreme biking to a global audience. Through the collaborative efforts of our team and the innovative use of Unreal Engine and animation techniques, we provided viewers with an immersive experience that showcased the skill and daring of the world-class stunt bikers.

This case study demonstrates the critical role of technology and creativity in enhancing the spectator experience in extreme sports events, and the importance of adaptability in the face of evolving circumstances.
